New Ohio law might require Walmart, Costco to simply accept money for funds

Ohioans might soon be shopping like it’s 1999 if legislators move the Currency Access to Spend Here (CASH) invoice, which might require companies and authorities workplaces to simply accept money for funds up to $500.
The invoice would require companies and authorities entities to offer at the least one point-of-sale location that accepts money.
Additionally, it bans them from charging those utilizing money for a transaction a greater price than those utilizing other fee strategies.
“It’s simple, cash is the basis for business in America. Our taxpayers should always have the ability to use cash in their daily lives,” said Ohio state Rep. David Thomas (R-Jefferson), who launched House Bill 554.
“I hear from residents who may not trust virtual payment options or just prefer to use physical cash. This bill balances the needs of government and business to be efficient with the ability to still rely on physical currency,” Thomas added.
As retailers, such as Target, Walmart and Costco transfer in direction of self checkout strategies that often don’t settle for money, this might imply some major adjustments to their strategy.

However, it could not essentially imply hiring more employees, as the invoice states that the money point-of-sale may be “automated or operated by a person.”
Thomas’ invoice mirrors one that Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., and Sen. Kevan Cramer, R-N.D., launched, generally known as the Payment Choice Act of 2025.
Their invoice would also require companies to simply accept money and bar them from charging a greater price to those who selected to pay in money.
