Finalists for the function reportedly embody National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, current Fed Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, and Rick Rieder, chief investment officer of global fixed income at BlackRock.
Trump has been keen to interchange Powell – whose time period expires in May 2026 – after months of blasting the Fed chairman for not slashing charges rapidly enough.

As the viewers of traders, tech bros and international leaders laughed, Trump urged Bessent – who was in the crowd – to “work on this guy,” including: “The rates are too high, Scott. And if you don’t get it fixed fast, I’m going to fire your ass, okay?”
“If you were in the room, he was joking,” Bessent told CNBC on Tuesday. “We’ve gotten to this point where monetary policy has gotten very complicated, and it’s more than just cutting rates.”

But Fed Governor Stephen Miran has said he would vote for a quarter-point cut if that meant the distinction in getting decrease charges. He has beforehand dissented in favor of a bigger cut.
Meanwhile, Bessent said he’s hoping for the next chairman to deliver the function into a new period.
“I think we’ve got to kind of simplify things,” he said Tuesday.
