China to limit entry to Nvidia chips as Trump seems to be to carry export curbs: report

China is ready to restrict entry to Nvidia’s superior H200 chips – even after President Trump said the US chipmaker might resume exports to Beijing, according to a report.
Chinese corporations have been compelled to make use of less-powerful home alternate options as the US has enforced strict export controls on its AI chips – fearful Beijing might use the tech in navy purposes or to edge ahead in the AI race.
But now that it appears those export curbs could be lifted, Chinese regulators are discussing methods to permit only restricted entry to the chips because it encourages home manufacturing, two people with information of the matter told the Financial Times.

Buyers would seemingly be required to undergo a tedious approval course of, including submitting requests to buy the Nvidia chips and submitting an rationalization as to why home producers are unable to satisfy their wants, the sources said.
A final resolution on the matter has not yet been made, according to the report.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump announced the US “will allow NVIDIA to ship its H200 products to approved customers in China,” and that “25% will be paid” to the US.
He said the Commerce Department is engaged on the final particulars, and the same export strategy will likely be utilized to other American chipmakers like AMD and Intel.
The White House and Chinese Embassy didn’t instantly reply to The Post’s requests for remark.
Exports of Nvidia’s H200 chips – its second-best era of AI chips – had been initially banned under the Biden administration over national safety issues.

Meanwhile, Beijing has been urging home producers to step up their game and create chips that can exchange American counterparts like the H200.
But Chinese tech giants like Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent are desperate to resume imports of Nvidia GPUs.
As Beijing discourages corporations from utilizing American tech, it has ramped up its customs checks of chip imports and provided power subsidies to AI data facilities.
The two regulators in charge of this unbiased chipmaking campaign might finally ban the public sector from shopping for H200 chips, sources told the Financial Times.
While Trump announced that exports would resume, he does face some obstacles at home – including a group of US senators who launched laws that would ban such a transfer for a minimum of 30 months.

US lawmakers are also trying into adopting an approval course of that would only enable the sale of H200 chips to corporations it deems “safe,” sources told the Financial Times.
In the meantime, Nvidia has continued to export its H20 chip – a lower-performance variation – to China after it agreed in August at hand over 15% of revenues from such sales to the US authorities.
Beijing officers, however, have clamped down on entry to these chips, arguing the lower-tier Nvidia product is no better than Chinese alternate options.
In a response to Trump’s Truth Social put up, Chinese overseas ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said: “China has consistently advocated that China and the US achieve mutual benefit and win-win results through co-operation.”
US officers have been stepping up their enforcement efforts as smugglers attempt to bypass chip trade restrictions.
